TESOL and TESOL International Convention


TESOL is an acronym that stands for Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages, and holds the “heart and soul” of all English language teaching practices. TESOL embodies the concepts and settings of ESL (English as a Second Language) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language).

Every year, TESOL International Association promotes its “TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo”, where English teachers from all over the world have the chance to meet and to learn from the convention’s diversified workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. Moreover, it is a great opportunity to catch up on the latest language teaching trends as well as on what the newest research, papers and cases have to offer.

This year’s convention was held in Chicago, Illinois, from 27-30 of March, at the state-of-the-art (and huge!) McCormick Place http://mccormickplace.com. Attendees could pick workshops and lectures of interest from a vast list of events which were offered from 7 A.M. to 6 P.M. daily. Go Ahead, represented by teacher Fabi Seidel, took pride in being one of the few Brazilian language schools to attend the conference.

In addition to the “forever debated themes” such as the best ways to teach language skills (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), this year’s “hot topics” included Project based learning, Task-based language teaching, the essential elements for good EFL teaching foundations, teaching the four skills integratively, the best practices in Business English classes, among others. Some of the major global publishers displayed their newest book collections and teaching tools at the exhibition halls, where you could also have your brand-new books signed by important authors!

One of the convention’s highlights was “Tea with Tesol’s Best”, a special event which promoted an informal integration among authors, researchers, linguists, grammarians and teachers, who were invited to sit together and enjoy some tea, to talk, and  exchange ideas. Teacher Fabi had the great honor to sit at Diane Larsen-Freeman’s table. Diane is one of the best-known grammarians and authors, who, together with Marianne Celce-Murcia, devised the innovative concept of a 3-dimension grammatical system, stating that not only form mattered, but meaning and use were equally important grammar components. It was a wonderful opportunity to pick her brains and socialize with peer teachers from the US, China, Japan, Russia and Canada.

TESOL é uma sigla que significa Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Ensino de Inglês a Falantes de Outras Línguas) e representa "o corpo e a alma" de todas as práticas de ensino do inglês. TESOL incorpora os conceitos e cenários de ESL (English as a Second Language, ou Inglês como Segunda Língua) e EFL (English as a Foreign Language, ou Inglês como Língua Estrangeira).

Todos os anos a TESOL International Association promove as suas convenções anuais ou “TESOL International Convention & English Language Expo”, onde professores de inglês do mundo todo têm a oportunidade de se encontrar e aprender a partir de atividades diversificadas oferecidas na convenção, tais como workshops, palestras e exposições. Além disso, é uma excelente oportunidade de se atualizar às tendências mais atuais do ensino de línguas assim como "ficar por dentro" das pesquisas e estudos mais recentes. 

A convenção deste ano aconteceu em Chicago, Illinois, de 27 a 30 de março, no lindíssimo e moderno McCormick Place http://mccormickplace.com. Os participantes puderam escolher os workshops e palestras de seu interesse a partir de uma lista de eventos oferecidos diariamente das 7 da manhã às 6 da tarde. A Go Ahead, representada pela teacher Fabi, foi uma das escolas de idiomas brasileiras a participar da conferência. 

Além dos temas que são "eternamente debatidos" tais como as melhores formas de ensinar as habilidades de Reading, Writing, Speaking e Listening, os pontos "quentes" da conferência deste ano incluíram Project based learning, Task-based language teaching, os elementos essenciais para uma boa base de ensino em cenários EFL, métodos para ensinar as quatro habilidades de forma integrada, as melhores práticas para ensinar Business English, dentre outras. Grandes editoras também exibiram suas coleções mais recentes em uma feira, onde os autores deram autógrafos e confraternizaram com os participantes.

Um dos pontos altos da convenção foi o “Tea with Tesol’s Best” (ou Chá com os Melhores do TESOL), um evento especial a fim de promover a integração informal entre autores, linguistas, pesquisadores e professores, onde foram convidados a tomar chá juntos, conversar e trocar ideias. A teacher Fabi sentiu-se honrada em sentar à mesa da Diane Larsen-Freeman, uma das autoras de gramáticas mais conhecidas que, junto com Marianne Celce-Murcia, propôs o conceito inovador de uma abordagem tri-dimensional para a gramática, onde sentido e uso são componentes tão importantes quanto forma. Foi uma oportunidade maravilhosa para aprender com ela e conhecer colegas professores dos EUA, China, Japão, Rússia e Canadá.
